I was gonna claim my holidays back from corporate monsters, impossibly sticky snowflakes and lost weekend opportunities. I quit being a little jock in a tie and a paint-speckled wannabe artist, and I thought I'd tell Jes that I didn't want to be her eye-candy waiter anymore. But I clean forgot about it over loud music, Hen-Parties and Mongolian girls.
Over the ear-shattering music, it was admittedly a fun night - One with free drinks and casual company, with none of the hassles of really knowing someone. Meeting new people becomes an addiction, cause for a few minutes you're painting a picture of who they are. Forming impressions and often misinterpreted detail, you forget about everyone or everything else. Hah, they're what Edward Norton called single-serving friends Maybe I'll just take a 2 week break.
Nowadays you don't call, which is fine. I'm sorry that on the occasions that you do, I notice too late. Me? I'll be working, probably with an armful of cups and a tray of drinks. When you see a waiter at your birthday bash maybe you'll think of me and talk to him a little, give him a small tip and stroke his face. Cause it always makes me smile even though I know I should feel at least a little disconcerted. Maybe its because I appreciate how genuine it feels, even though it may not be it in the least bit. I wish I could be part of your birthday too, but I wouldn't be such good company. I feel so contemptuous when you tell me what you wish for, cause its only then that you've ever felt so far removed. So perhaps it is for the best that we haven't been talking, and it should be like that for a while more. But having said that, just know that I still love you very much, and I hope that you have a wonderful 21st with hassle-less company.
